Norman will be directing his play, Strange Affliction, at the Thousand Oaks Library. Carl Reiner, Samantha Eggar, and Nanette Fabray will be featured in the play. Attendance is by invitation only. There was a very nice writeup about it in the Ventura County Star,. and another mention in the LA Times.

Filmmaker Paul Bonesteel recently interviewed Norman for a documentary on Carl Sandburg. He has published a short excerpt of the interview on his blog.

December, 2006

Leonard Maltin reviewed the recent interview DVD of Corwin: The Poet Laureate of Radio: An Interview with Norman Corwin on Maltin's web site.

In it, he states: "[The DVD] consists of Norman sitting in front of a backdrop and talking about his experiences. Believe me, that’s enough. Corwin’s career is the stuff of legend, and to have this chronicle in his own words is priceless."

We couldn't agree more.

November, 2006

A new documentary interview with Corwin has been released entitled The Poet Laureate of Radio: An Interview with Norman Corwin. In December 2004, filmmaker Michael James Kacey of Anthracite films held an interview with Corwin for his documentary on "Old-Time Radio," called "Radio Changed America." Corwin was so pleased with the interview that he encouraged the filmmaker to release the interview to the public on its own.

The interview spans Corwin's life, from his first experiences hearing radio, to his recent activities. It is beautifully shot, and Corwin is engaging.

June, 2006

HBO Networks has acquired the rights to the recent documentary, and will be airing it on HBO/Cinemax networks between July 27 and August 23, 2006. The first showing will be June 27 at 7PM Eastern, on Cinemax East.

The documentary will be unavailable on DVD until the HBO contract expires in 2007.

The documentary "A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin" by Corinne Marrinan and Eric Simonson won the Academny Award for Best Short Subject Documentary.

When it is offered commecially on DVD, this site (and the Lodestone Catalog) will carry it.

Norman had surgery to releive swelling on the brain caused by a fall. He has returned from the hospital, and begun physical therapy. The USC Daily Trojan covered the story.

A live performance of Corwin's On A Note Of Triumph, staged by audio dramatist Tony Palermo, took place in Los Angeles. Corwin attended the performance.

May 8, 2005

May, 8, 2005, was the 60th Anniversary of the broadcast of On A Note of Triumph. National Public Radio (NPR) aired a re-broadcast of the program, as well as a documentary about Corwin on or about that date. The documentary was narrated, in 1995, by Charles Kuralt, who was a longtime friend and a passionate fan of Norman Corwin's. Mr. Kuralt passed away in 1997, shortly after performing the lead role in Corwin's Our Lady Of The Freedoms (And Some Of Her Friends), and this rebroadcast has been dedicated to his memory.

Many stations aired these programs on Sunday, May 8, 2005, but may broadcast anytime until May, 2006. Encourage your local station to carry the broadcast.

In celebration of his birthday, The USC Annenberg School and the Museum of Television and Radio will present "Celebrating the Career of Norman Corwin" on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, 6:00 PM, at the Museum of Television and Radio, 465 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills.

The USC Annenberg School and the Museum of Television and Radio present an evening celebrating the remarkable career of journalism professor and radio pioneer Norman Corwin. May 8 marks the 60th anniversary of the original broadcast of Corwin's landmark radio drama, On a Note of Triumph. Corwin, who turns 95 on May 3, will participate in a stimulating evening of conversation, a video montage, and readings of his work by leading actors. Patt Morrison, Los Angeles Times columnist and public radio host, will emcee the event. There will be an admission fee to attend this event. More details to be provided.

The Librarian of Congress has named We Hold These Truths to the National Recording Registry. Started in 2000, the National Recording Registry contains sound recordings which are deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Each year, the Librarian of Congress names 50 recordings to the registry. In addition to We Hold These Truths, 2004 selections include range from Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust to the soundtrack from Star Wars to the rock group Nirvana's album Nevermind. http://www.loc.gov/today/pr/2005/05-087.html

The University of Southern California School of Journalism, where Corwin teaches, has announced that it will declare 2005 "Norman Corwin Year" in joint celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the broadcast of On A Note Of Triumph and the 95th anniversary of Corwin's birth.
