THE UNITED NATIONS YEARS

COULD BE, DOCUMENT A/777, FEAR ITSELF, WINDOWS ON THE WORLD, THE CHARTER IN THE SAUCER

Even as he was being denounced on the floor of the United States Senate by Nevada Senator Pat McCarran, Corwin began a new chapter in his radio career. He accepted the position of United Nations Radio Chief of Special Projects. Over the next few years Corwin contributed his efforts to the United Nations’ mission of making a better world. Most significantly, Corwin supervised a series of six documentaries (writing and directing two of them) under the collective title The Pursuit of Peace. The Corwin-helmed series won United Nations Radio and the Mutual Broadcasting System (MBS) a George F. Peabody Medal.

Norman Corwin left his job at UN Radio in early 1953 to return to Los Angeles to be with his wife and children and to focus on screenwriting projects. He had nothing to do with the actual production of The Charter in the Saucer aside from writing the script. He was not pleased with the way it turned out despite Laurence Olivier’s participation.
